Psychological Assessment

Novatu Counseling and Assessment offers psychological and neuropsychological testing and assessments.

Psychological assessment is a series of tests, usually conducted by a psychologist in order to gather additional information about how people may think feel and behave and respond in times of distress. The findings are usually gathered and a report is produced that will help guide the course of treatment for that particular client. Psychological assessments are usually conducted to guide mental health or psychiatric treatment, there is a trend toward insurance companies requiring an assessment in order to cover certain medical procedures. Psychological assessments that focus on a clients capability in a particular job setting or the capability of a defendant to stand trial are also common reasons for psychological assessments to be requested. Psychological assessments are also used in order to help students if they are requiring additional assistance or accommodations in their classroom settings.

Neuropsychological evaluation’s measure areas like attention span, problem-solving skills, memory, language development, intellectual functioning, visual spatial skills, academic and social/emotional functioning. Neuropsychological evaluations can be completed on people of almost any age including children adolescents and adults. Often children are referred due to developmental issues, learning disorders, attention deficit and hyperactivity as well as potential processing speed deficits or language disorders. While there are many other reasons but a neuropsychological evaluation may be warranted or necessary the professional that has requested the evaluation be completed will have a specific question in mind and be looking for some specific answers which of the testing will seek to provide. There are many areas of a neuropsychological evaluation and as a result often they take quite some time to complete.

An intake will be conducted by Dr. Orndorff in order to determine if testing is necessary based on the referral and the specific test that will need to be given. This is generally followed by the testing sessions as well as a follow up after the testing is completed to review the report and give final recommendations. The report and recommendations will also be sent to the referring provider, if there is one. If you have insurance you will most likely need a referral in order for any of the testing to be covered if you do not have insurance then we will discuss our cash pay rates for testing with you at the intake.
